Professor Joe A.D. Alie’s appointment as *Chancellor of Eastern Technical University* marks the culmination of an extraordinary academic journey distinguished by intellectual excellence, institutional leadership, and unwavering service to Sierra Leone’s educational development.

Born in Moyamba in southern Sierra Leone, Professor Alie’s rise from humble beginnings to national and international academic prominence reflects the enduring power of education to transform lives and societies. His early professional formation began at Milton Margai Teachers College, where he developed a passion for teaching and scholarship that would define the trajectory of his career.

He subsequently pursued higher education at *Fourah Bay College*, the oldest western-style university institution in sub-Saharan Africa, where he earned both a Bachelor of Arts with Honours and a Master of Arts degree in Modern History. Determined to deepen his scholarly engagement with African history and intellectual traditions, Professor Alie continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the United States, obtaining a PhD alongside a Certificate in African Studies.

Upon returning to Sierra Leone, Professor Alie devoted decades of distinguished service to Fourah Bay College and the University of Sierra Leone, where he became one of the nation’s most respected historians and academic administrators. Throughout his illustrious career, he served with distinction as Head of the Department of History and African Studies, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

Beyond his administrative responsibilities, Professor Alie earned widespread admiration as a mentor, scholar, and institution-builder. Generations of students and academics benefited from his guidance as a supervisor, examiner, and intellectual resource person. His leadership in academic committees, doctoral defense panels, and curriculum development initiatives contributed significantly to strengthening higher education in Sierra Leone.

Professor Alie’s scholarly influence extends far beyond the university classroom. As an accomplished author and historian, he produced several seminal works that have become foundational texts within Sierra Leone and the wider West African region. His publications, including Sierra Leone Since Independence, An Outline Political History of Sierra Leone, 1961–2007, and West African History for WASSCE Candidates, have shaped historical understanding and civic education for generations of students. He started with a publication for Selective Entrance Examination.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to scholarship, education, and national development, the Government of Sierra Leone conferred upon him the distinguished honour of Commander of the Order of the Rokel (COR) in 2006, one of the nation’s highest civilian awards.

Professor Alie’s appointment by His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio as Chancellor of Eastern Technical University, effective June 2026, represents both a national endorsement of his distinguished legacy and a strategic investment in the future of higher education in Sierra Leone. Established under the Universities Act No. 5 of 2021 and situated in Kenema, Eastern Technical University is emerging as an important institution within Sierra Leone’s evolving academic and technical education landscape.

As Chancellor, Professor Alie assumes a role of profound symbolic and institutional significance. He will preside over convocations, confer degrees, and provide strategic counsel to the university’s governing authorities while serving as an ambassador for the institution’s academic aspirations and public mission.

His appointment has been widely welcomed within academic and professional circles, where he is regarded as a scholar of exceptional integrity, intellectual depth, and national commitment. Colleagues and former students alike view his leadership as a source of inspiration and confidence for the continued advancement of higher education in Sierra Leone.
