He was born in Moyamba. 
Cert. in African Studies, H.T.C. (Milton Margai Teachers College) B.A. (Hons) University of Sierra Leone, M.A, University of Sierra Leone, Ph.D, (University of Wisconsin-Madison) 
Professor Joe. A. D. Alie joined the University of Sierra Leone in December, 1984. He has served in various capacities both Academic and Administrative. His research interest is related to Issues of development and underdevelopment in Africa, The history of Sierra Leone and Peace and Conflict Studies.

His published textbooks include: A New History of Sierra Leone, Sierra Leone Junior Secondary Social Studies/Population Education I-III, and A Concise Guide to Writing College and Research Papers.
