BIO – DATA OF PROFESSOR ONIKE PATRICIA RODRIGUES
Onike Patricia Rodrigues was born on the 26th day of September in 1953. She is a mother and grandmother as well and belongs to the Roman Catholic Christian faith. Onike started schooling at the St. Mary’s Primary School, St. Joseph’s Secondary School and the Prince of Wales School all in Freetown. She acquired her tertiary education from the School of Medicine, University of Leeds, United Kingdom and graduated as Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) with distinction in Biochemistry. She was a member of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom (MRCP) UK. She has a Diploma in Child Health from the Royal College of Physicians of London (DCH) and fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP), fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (FRCPCH). Onike also has a Certificate in Health Administration and Management from GIMPA and fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Onike has served in several professional areas ranging from Head of Department Child Health University of Ghana Medical School, Head of Department of Paediatrics at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Banjul, the Gambia, Acting Dean School of Nursing, College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana and Dean, School of Medicine, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Volta Region, Ghana.
The DVC spent a reasonable period at the University of Ghana were she held a number of academic position such as Senior Registrar in Child Health, Lecturer in Child Health, Senior Lecturer in Child Health and Associate Professor in Child Health. She was a member, University of Ghana Medical School Board, member Finance and Development Committee, College of Health Sciences, member University of Ghana Academic Board and member Executive Committee, University of Ghana.
She has served as post-graduate students’ research projects supervisor in a number of academic institutions including: – Rotavirus Diarrhoea in Young Children. A project for the award of the PhD Degree in Microbiology of the University of Ghana.2015, Artemisinin Combination Therapy for Uncomplicated Malaria in Ghanaian Children: Efficacy, Safety and Pharmacokinetics. A project for the award of the PhD of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark in 2006, Paediatric Rotavirus Disease in the Gambia – a Hospital Based Sentinel Study. A project for the award of the Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians in 2006. Perceptions of University Students on Genetic Counselling in Sickle Cell Disease at Valley View University, Ghana. A project for the award of the M.Phil. in Nursing of the University of Ghana, Leucocyte Counts in Children with Sickle Cell Disease. A project for the award of the Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians in 2013. Principal Supervisor, Acute chest syndrome in Ghanaian children with sickle cell disease in 2015. A project for the award of the Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians.
Her undergraduate teaching experience span from the University of Ghana Medical School, where she served as Lecturer in Paediatrics for the MBChB degree programme, School of Nursing, University of Ghana. Lecturer for the Paediatric Nursing Certificate Programme, UGMS Graduate Entry Medical Programme.(GEMP).Lecturer for the GEMP programme for University graduates who have a first degree in Science into the Medical School, University of Health and Allied Sciences Ho, Volta Region. Lecturer for Medical Terminology Course, Family Health Medical School, Accra, Ghana. Part time Lecturer for Medical Terminology Course.
Her post-graduate teaching/training experience ranges from Trainer in Post graduate training in Paediatrics with the West African College of Physicians and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. External Examiner in Paediatrics ( Undergraduate Programme ), School of Medical Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana, University of Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana in 2012, Faculty of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of the Gambia, College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of Sierra Leone, Examiner in Paediatrics (Post Graduate Programme), West African College of Physicians from 1999 to Present, Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and examiner in Paediatrics for Foreign Medical Graduates on behalf of the Ghana Medical and Dental Council.
Onike Patricia Rodrigues had also gained a wealth of experience from the St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, University of Ghana, Legon, Patron – Federation of Ghana Catholic Health Trainees, International Movement of Catholic Students, Pax Romana, Vice President – Sickle Cell Association of Ghana and executive Member – Sickle Cell Association of Ghana (National Executive).
